Thirst for Life

‘Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”’ John 4:10 (NIV)

Her problem was, she didn’t know.

She didn’t know what gift God is willing to give to us. She didn’t know who she was speaking to.

Do you know what gift God is willing to give? And do you know who Jesus really is?

The woman in the spotlight hadn’t had the most straight forward of lives. She had been married several times and the man she was now with wasn’t her husband. If she had sold her story to the newspapers no doubt it would have included a great deal of sadness and heartache and pain.

  • Had her previous husbands died?
  • Had she or they been unfaithful and her marriages ended in divorce?
  • Were there children involved?

We’re not told.

What we do know is, is that this woman was searching for a happiness, that pain and sadness would not take away. She was searching for something that would satisfy the emptiness in her soul.

Are you searching for a happiness that satisfies and lasts?

God can give you that happiness. That is His gift. It doesn’t come in the form of relationships or sex or work. It will not prevent you experiencing the normal sadness we expect to face in this life.

But it is a gift that can never be taken away. It is the gift of eternal life. It is the gift of knowing Him. It is the gift of forgiveness and it is given through the Lord Jesus Christ.
