Valued by God

‘Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?’ Matthew 6:26 (NIV)

You know, some verses in the Bible are quite complicated, but not this one.

This verse states clearly that God provides for His creation. Let me ask you a question, when was the last time you considered where the air that you breathe, comes from, or indeed gave some thought to where your next breath will come from? We take the very air that we breathe totally for granted and, despite all the rubbish that we pour into our atmosphere, we can still breathe easily most of the time.

We humans have put so much store in our houses, and our possessions, and if there are problems, we think we can solve them by ourselves. The birds of the air, build a nest to lay their eggs in, and bring up their young. After this is done, they move on, and they don’t worry about where they will sleep, and they certainly aren’t concerned about possessions.

We see when Jesus was here on earth He lived the same way. We are told, and know it to be true, that we come into this world with nothing, and will leave with nothing. Yet despite this, we get ourselves into debt, and spend so much time worrying and pursuing the material things of this life.

God tells us, in the Bible, not to worry about anything, and in this verse, he gives us a great example. Birds and animals have to rely on his provision. Perhaps in this first month of 2011, we should consider our own position. Perhaps, we should consider those around us, and start to put into perspective the importance of friends and family over possessions and materialism.

It says at the end of this verse, “are you not of more value than they?” This speaks of how much God values and loves us. He has blessed us with such a wonderful world. His creation is awesome; let’s not continue to take it for granted.
