Missing Peace?

‘Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to all men on whom His favour rests.”‘

Luke 2:13-14 (NIV)

The phrase “Peace for our time” was spoken on 30th September 1938 by British Prime minister, Neville Chamberlain, who having brokered an agreement with Hitler believed he had established peace.

It was somewhat ironic though that on the very next day, Germany began its occupation of Czechoslovakia and less than a year later, Europe was plunged into WWII.

“Peace for our time”, despite the dreamers of the generations and the aspirations of many, almost always appears to be out of reach. For when one war ceases in one place, a conflict always seems to begin in another.

Yet the peace that was being spoken of by the angels in the above verse is a peace that is far greater than anything that has been brokered by politicians. For it is not a peace between mankind, one country laying down its’ arms with another.

It is referring to having peace with God. Peace between men and their Maker. Peace in your soul.

Do you have peace in your soul? Peace with God? Or are you plagued with the guilt of the past? Unable to work out what is missing from your life? A God shaped void in your heart?

Each one of us needs peace with God, for each one of us has been born in opposition to Him. Each one of us has not wanted Him in our lives. By nature we are hostile to Him and the bible describes us as enemies.

Yet the beauty of what the angels were saying: is that through this Child that was laid in a manger. Each one of us can find peace with God. Each one of us can have our hostility towards Him forgiven. And have peace with heaven.

And we can have it through what He did on the cross.
